THE RUSSIAN SHOW
At long last the Royal Academy has successfully
launched the “From Russia” exhibition to spectacular
revues. The queues of art lovers wanting to feast their eyes,
grow even longer day by day and the column inches written by
“those in the know” are equally growing longer and
running out of superlatives to express the sheer magnificence
of what is on show. Following the much publicised squabbling
between Russian and Britain in the run up to the Royal Academy’s
opening of “From Russia” it appears to be a triumph
matched only by the exhibions staged of Tutankhamen treasures
and The Terracotta Army. These collaborations are always overwhelmingly
difficult to pull off, mainly due to politics, as in this case,
but it all adds to the hype and excitement. It is a must see.
To coincide with the Royal Academy’s
show of old masterpieces, Bohemia Galleries York is staging
its own exhibition of modern day “masterpieces”.
Whilst the artists are not yet household names to rank alongside
Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Monet Cezannes and the like, they
are never the less well on their way and have individually and
collectively been exhibited and sold in many of the major galleries
in the UK. More importantly these galleries are mostly based
in London and the south of England so to have such major talent
on show and available to purchase in York is a wonderful opportunity
for the City’s inhabitants and visitors, and a coup for
the gallery. The artists exhibiting are at least all Russian.
There has been a major growth in investment buying of Russian
works of art in the last few years, due mainly to the shift
of power players on the world stage of buyers. This obviously
extends to football teams as well.
This is what Bohemia has in store and because
this is such an important exhibition and the works are rarely
available in quantity for the gallery to show, the length of
the exhibition has been extended to run from the 8th February
to the 6th of April. Check with gallery for opening times ring

Dimitry Lisichenko born 1976 trained Moscow
Art Lyceum and Moscow State Academic Art Institute. Initially
worked on restoring the murals in the Moscow Cathedral and eventually
developed his own works of oil on canvas to his current interest
in romantic and genre subjects with their meditative and often
enigmatic women in atmospheric interiors. The compositions are
unusual and the viewer is invited into an intimate moment in
time captured with unerring detail. Dimitry uses a beautiful
soft colour palette of pastel shades. Recent shows include The
Nude in the Medici Gallery Cork street London and a solo at
the Albemarle Gallery Mayfair.
Alexey Terenin born 1969 Moscow raised in Prague.
The son of an architect he studied and graduated in this subject
from the Moscow Architectural Academy 1992. He never practised
architecture as on graduation he was asked to design a set for
the Moscow State Bolshoi Ballet production of Capriccio. He
then went on to participate in visual art’s in Czech Republic,
Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, the UK and USA. His
work features in bank and corporate collections all over the
World. He paints smaller works on board and his unusual style
produces a fascinating eerie enigmatic quality to a subject
matter of angelic figures which you simply cannot take your
eyes off. They haunt the viewer.
Tatiana Struchkova trained at the Moscow Academy
of Art. Her paintings of oils on canvas are of a refreshingly
high standard sadly not too frequently seen in the London contemporary
art market. They have a beautiful tranquillity and depth; her
figurative works are modern yet have a timeless quality and
atmosphere. Tatiana uses a strong colour palette, lots of black
as her background with beautiful skin tones and usually relate
a message to the viewer such as the one seen here titled “Transformation”
telling the story of a girl being prepared for her move into
womanhood. She is a member of the Moscow Union of Artists.
Andrey Demin born 1962 in Zagorsk surrounded
by famous artist including his father. He has been exhibiting
work in the UK and Ireland since 1997 and has collectors throughout
these countries.
Maria Stcherbinina born 1968 into an artistic
family. Studied painting at Moscow University of Design the
famous institute founded by Sergei Stroganov, where influences
of Lissitzky, Kandinsky and Malevich remain. There is absolutely
no doubt about her influences, the Turneresque colour palette,
the use of light, the luminosity to the works, Maria uses lots
of oil paint applied thickly onto the canvas in an impressionist
style. Her works are at once a joy to behold and have such movement
as the one seen here “Swans”. You can almost feel
Exhibitions in London’s Medici Cork Street Gallery the
Oriel and Dublin. Her work is in collections here and in New
York.
