(b.1942)
Born in Port Seton, John Bellany's father and grandfather were
fishermen, and Bellany himself worked gutting fish during his
student days. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1960
until1965, and from1965 until 1968 at the Royal College of Art,
London, developing a highly personal mythological-figurative
style at a time when abstract art was becoming the norm. His
large scale works often incorporate hybrid human and animal
forms, while recently his work has become less tortured, more
optimistic and increasingly mellow. Bellany is arguably Scotland's
greatest living figurative painter and in the course of a long
and distinguished career he has produced an extraordinary body
of work. His work can be seen in many prestigious museums and
art galleries including the National Galleries of Scotland,
Tate Britain, the Museum of Modern Art New York and the Metropolitan
Museum in New York. In 1994 Bellany was awarded a CBE. Bellany
has illustrated Two Stories by Sir Walter Scott.
